Pressing plant in Nashville, Tennessee. Founded in 1949 and operating until 1974.
In 1962, the company and plant relocated from Franklin Street to Chestnut Street.
In 1970, Southern Plastics filed bankruptcy proceedings and was in receivership when United Record Pressing purchased the real estate and record pressing equipment in 1971.
Despite the receivership, Southern Plastics remained in business and leased the former Standard Record Pressing Company, Inc. plant to continue business until 1974.
Since the mid-1950s, pressings are identified by the "SO" prefix, often noted on the record label, but always in the runouts, followed by a 2 to 5 digit chronological number (which was not used on contract pressings for larger labels like MGM). When jobs were plated at Nashville Matrix and pressed at Southern Plastics, a "5" is found in the run-out, designating them as Southern pressings.
In the BAOI, please enter the identifier exactly as it appears in the runouts or the labels, including the prefix (if any).
In the LCCN, please refrain from entering the prefix and include only the two sequential job numbers found in the runouts.
Pressing years can be discovered by their symmetric use of matrix #'s:
For example 10318 = Year 1970 17275063 & SO 12136 = Year 1972 31900699
