Recording and mastering studio in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, USA, founded by Elektra owner Jac Holzman. It opened in January 1968 and the goal was to have the vast majority of the label's output recorded here. Previously, Elektra had used its own studio on the East Coast (Elektra Studios, New York, which remained operational) or Sunset Sound Recorders on the West Coast.
The studio started as a division of Kinney Corp., becoming a division of Elektra Records Corp. in 1972 and Elektra/Asylum/Nonesuch Records in 1974.
The 8-track studio was one of the most advanced in the industry at the time. It was noted for its 22-position Sound Techniques console. It was equipped with a Neumann disk-cutting system, installed in studio C until 1974 and in studio B afterwards. At the time of building, Holzman also purchased two adjacent lots, allowing for expansion overtime.
The studio no longer exists, the building is currently occupied by Electric Entertainment, who provides video services at this location.
Records cut here can be recognized by "ESR" etched in the runouts, often alongside the engineer's initials. Use [Lacquer Cut At] when present.
