Incorporated November 2, 1968. Dissolved December 16, 1980 upon the bankruptcy of its parent company GRT Corporation. Legally known as GRT of Canada, Ltd.

Initially based in London, Ontario, as a Canadian manufacturer and distributor of 4-track and 8-track tapes as a subsidiary of General Recorded Tape, Inc. of California.
The marketing offices were relocated from the London manufacturing plant to Toronto, Ontario in 1969, and commenced distributing foreign label records and tapes, as well as concentrating on recording its own artists for its own GRT label. As they expanded into cassettes, a second tape manufacturing plant was opened in Alliston, Ontario in March 1969. The Montreal branch was opened March 16, 1970.
By 1976 GRT of Canada, Ltd. had acquired foreign catalogues of popular music (ABC Records, ABC/Dunhill Records, Island Records, and other labels), classical music (Disques Festival, Collection Richesse Classique, and Westminster), blues (Chess), and jazz (America Records, Impulse!, and Musidisc), Janus Records, 20th Century Fox Records and Sire.
It also distributed the Canadian labels Axe Records and Daffodil Records.
Sub labels were Cymbal Records established Aug 12, 1977 and Magnum Records established April 20, 1979.
Founding president was Ross Reynolds, who later was the president of MCA Records Canada. Reynolds, was succeeded in 1978 by Gordon Edwards. Original Canadian Sales & Marketing Manager was Ed LaBuick.
Canadian artists who recorded for GRT itself or for the Magnum label included Beverly Glenn-Copeland, Dan Hill, R. Harlan Smith, and Ian Thomas, the reggae group Ishan People, Downchild Blues Band, Moe Koffman, Lighthouse, Prism, Everyday People, FM and Doug Riley's Dr. Music.
