Kelley was born to parents Ophelia Bakon and Herbert Kelley. A lifelong resident of Boston, he was a graduate of Boston Latin High School and the Museum of Fine Arts School.

As well as being an accomplished musician and fashion designer, he worked as a technical support worker for a health care facility in Florida for six years until his death.
