Big Shug

Real Name: Cary Guy

Big Shug, born Big Shug on December 13, 1961, in Boston, Massachusetts, specifically in the Mattapan neighborhood, is a hip-hop artist and a member of the Gang Starr Foundation. He was initially a part of the collective surrounding Guru and DJ Premier but was unable to actively participate with Gang Starr during the group's peak success in the 1990s due to a prison sentence. Shug's career began in the 1980s, and after serving his sentence, he resumed his music career in the 1990s. He released solo albums such as Who’s Hard? (2005) and Street Champ (2007), known for his deep voice and straightforward, honest lyrics. Despite his earlier incarceration, Shug remained closely connected to the Gang Starr Foundation and played a key role in supporting artists within the collective.
