Studied harmony at the same high school attended by Frank Wess. He first worked with [a1154538] and then, after service in the United States Navy freelanced for a time in Chicago. From 1951 to 1953, he worked with Earl Hines. Johnson recorded on albums led by Paul Gonsalves, Zoot Sims, and Mose Allison.
