Scott Fagan

American singer songwriter. Father of Stephin Merritt of The Magnetic Fields. Born in 1945 on 52nd Street in New York City to singer Frankie "Chu" Galvin (one time member of entertainment trio Tic Tac Toe) and jazz singer & dancer Lelia Kelly. Afterr their parents split, he was raised by his mother in Charlotte Amalie on Saint Thomas, one of the USA's Virgin islands. In 1964 Fagan left his life in poverty there and went to New York to find Doc Pomus, who liked what he heard when Fagan sang for him. After manager Herb Gart signed him the same year, Fagan started work on his debut album, writing it over the course of 3 years. Though he almost signed for Apple, he was signed to Atco instead ... with nobody there caring much for Fagan's success. Apart from Jasper Johns creating a litograph named Scott Fagan Record in 1970, a flopped Broadway rock opera titled Soon in 1971 and a second unsuccesful album in 1975, Fagan's career was over ... until his debut was rediscovered in 2015, to rave reviews. Fagan had gone back to living on the Virgin Islands in the Carribean / West Indies, sometimes playing live, but was reunited with his son Stephin in 2012.
