Radio Luxembourg, operating from 1933 to 1992, was the on-air ID of Compagnie Luxembourgeoise de Radiodiffusion (CLR), Europe's first commercial radio station. Its very popular English Language Service was originally broadcast at the long-wave frequency of 230 kHz (1304 m) before switching to the medium-wave 1439 kHz (208 m) in 1951, leading to "208" being a familiar part of the station's branding. Outside of Britain, the station came to be known as Radio Television Luxembourg (RTL), and it was one of the many broadcasting companies in the RTL Group.
