Founded in 1972 by jazz enthusiast [a=Nils Winther] who had begun to record artists live at Jazzhaus Montmartre in Copenhagen ([l269003]). Many US jazz musicians had relocated to Europe as American interest in the music declined, and Montmartre and Steeplechase from the early 70's became outlets for such artists as [a=Chet Baker], [a=Paul Bley] [a251779], [a=Stan Getz], [a=Dexter Gordon], [a=Shirley Horn], [a=Thad Jones], [a=Duke Jordan], [a=Jackie McLean], [a=Horace Parlan], [a=Archie Shepp] and Doug and [a=Jimmy Raney].
Nils Winther recorded and produced most of the labels releases.

Be aware that some of the CD repressings are actually CDrs, they are unmarked as such. The US distributor said that the owner is pressing small batches of CDrs for older, slower selling titles, such as [r7772799]. So a seller who has a sealed copy has no way of knowing what is inside.
