Oriole was a UK independent label.
The label handled UK release from the Mercury Records catalogue until 1954, when the parent company Oriole Records Limited launched the Mercury label to the UK market.
After the "Skiffle" successes of Chas McDevitt and Nancy Whiskey, the label had a further decade of limited success with singer Maureen Evans and Swedish guitar group The Spotnicks, who delivered UK chart hits between 1960 and 1964. For a brief period, Oriole handled the releases of emerging US label Motown in the UK, but that label's move to EMI in 1963 ended the association. Oriole was eventually absorbed into the CBS operation in the mid '60s, and after that the label was rarely seen.
